A Bad Case of Stripes

A Bad Case of Stripes, by David Shannon
I think anything that David Shannon writes is genius, but this particular picture book is especially charming. It's silly enough that even tiny tots will like the pictures, but the story is sophisticated enough that older children will be captivated as well. The teaser (as taken from Amazon.com):
"A highly original moral tale acquires mythic proportions when Camilla Cream worries too much about what others think of her and tries desperately to please everyone."
The solution is hysterical, so I won't spill the beans here, but I highly encourage you to check out this book if you've never read it.

The Whimsical Bakehouse

The Whimsical Bakehouse, by Kaye & Liv Hansen
This is a really fun cookbook with LOTS of pictures (which is a must for cookbooks in my opinion) and really yummy recipes. The cakes are very playful... the author includes lots of ideas and techniques that you can adapt to fit your own needs. I also learned some cake basics (such as "crumbing" a cake before icing it and assembling tiered cakes).

Here are some of my favorite bits:
  1. Kaye's Italian Meringue Buttercream Recipe, pg.37
  2. Cookies & Cream Filling, pg. 65
  3. Multicolor Chocolate Method, pg. 78
